stand by my side I'm gonna build you a house I'm gonna build you a wall To keep you safe from it all Take my hand I'll lead you and we'll never be alone | Summer break had been fantastic. While they hadn't gone on a road trip like the previous year, it was still pretty great to be spending all that time with Eli. In fact, Benji had been having such an awesome time, that he hadn't even really realized just how quickly the three months had gone by. It almost felt like he had blinked, and then suddenly they were back at Regency. To start their junior year. Wow. Three whole years; a giddy grin crossed Benji's expression at just the thought alone -- knowing he had been Eli's friend for all these years. Gosh, some days, it felt like Eli had been apart of his life forever. He would always be apart of his life. Benji hoped so, just had this feeling in his gut.
Strolling into the dormitory building, Benjamin glanced down at the slip sheet of paper in his hand; the one that normally held their dorm room number on it. He smiled, excited to see where he and Eli would be rooming this year. The dorm room numbers were often different, because they either got an increase or a decrease in students. Not that it mattered much to Benjamin -- so long as he was with Eli, everything would work out well. Always did; Eli just had this way of helping Benji to see the better things in life. He had so much to thank him for, but he never quite knew how to get out the words.
Realizing that he was getting sidetracked by his own thoughts, Benji refocused on the paper in his hands. Right! Their dorm. He turned then, wandering down the hallway, but didn't hear Eli's familiar steps alongside him. Blinking, Benji glanced over, then quickly turned, spotting Eli heading in a different direction entirely. Huh. Weird, he must've gotten turned around. Stupid Eli.

we'll never be alone i'm gonna build you a house. i'm gonna build you a wall, to keep you safe from it all. just close your eyes. | Pros of going back to the Academy was the fact he could chill with his Benji without the eyes of parents or siblings. Whenever he brought him over, it was like he suddenly mattered during the summer… his parents were charmed, but truly, it was odd for Eli to have allowed someone into his room so often as he did Benji nowadays.
The cons, however, were that they now had to juggle time with education. Eli just hoped he didn’t have the same bat in math as he did last year. The grandma was extra stern on her “no phones in class” rule… not to mention the homework. He pitied any poor sob getting her for the first time, for she raised your hopes with only needing questions one through three, but lets not forget the parts in each question.
He stretched his arms over his head—fingers entwined—as he shifted, relaxing at the satisfying “pop” in his back as he kept his papers clamped momentarily between his teeth. He’d checked earlier on where he and Benji’s room was, so it was easy to migrate in that general direction. Only when he went left, Benji went right. He paused in step. The blue haired teen appeared to notice a second later, too, that he hadn’t followed him.
“Nah, man, it’s over here.” He pointed, an eyebrow arched in confusion as he pointed with a thumb towards the right. “See?” He raised the paper and map he’d marked specifically for this occasion of their room. | © seadra of gs |

"No, I'm pretty sure that it's--"
“See?”
Rolling his eyes, Benji smirked and walked over to where Eli was. Alright, he'd play the game for now. He seriously had thought Eli was just joking around. Until he took a better look at the map. Annd the sheet in Eli's hand. Eyebrows lifting, he glanced at the number, then the number on his own sheet, then back to Eli's. Back to his. Back and forth, trying to really understand what the hell was going on.
"They switched our rooms?!"
He hadn't entirely meant to sound so annoyed; but honestly. For real. This was complete and utter crap. Benji let out a rather loud groan of frustration, rubbing at the side of his hair while gritting at his teeth. Fantastic. What a great start to the school year. Oh this was not good. Not good at all. Could he talk to someone about this?
"Maybe we can get them to switch our rooms so we're in the same one, or whatever," He mumbled this, contemplatively. The chances were extremely unlikely. But eh, it was worth a shot. | © seadra of gs |

we'll never be alone i'm gonna build you a house. i'm gonna build you a wall, to keep you safe from it all. just close your eyes. | Benji was so sure of himself, but Eli knew it wasn’t over there, okay. He’s traversed the dormitories enough to feel confident enough he knew the wings down like the back of his hands. Nonetheless, he had proof. The smirk and the sway over of his companion didn’t lessen his confidence. If the two of them were on the opposite sides of the debate team, it’s likely that it would be more than just a few hours of chatter back and forth.
What he hadn’t, however, expected was to be found both right and wrong. His smug grin only lasted for a moment before Benji’s ruffled concern caused him to peer over at his own paper. Their numbers were different. His lips parted, lingering open for a long moment before he clenched his jaw with one eyebrow raised and the other pulled downwards. That… wasn’t right. It was an assumption that they would share a room, yes, but… Why after two years did they have to change now?
“The fu—” He cut off, glancing upwards towards the staff member who glared back at him from down the hall. Nose wrinkling in distaste, Elijah gave a firm nod in agreement. They had to get ‘em switched. The grim reality of it was that neither could say that they were allergic to their new roommates and magically get swapped again. It didn’t happen that way.
“School just sucks the fun outta everything,” he grumbled, shifting so he could plop an elbow on Benji’s shoulder and lean on him for comfort. “How far away are we?” He raised the map again, praying that the distance wasn’t greater than necessary. | © seadra of gs |

"....This is the worst,"
Benji sighed; knowing he was probably over dramatizing it, but-- he had really, really been looking forward to just chilling around with Eli again. That was the comfortable routine they had! Who else was going to be able to stomach Benji's odd quirks? Who else knew what he liked to do for supper, or how he did the dishes, the laundry. No one. There was no one who could become that comfortable, at least, not in such a short time span. Not to Benji.
His mood did brighten, just a bit, when he felt Eli's arm leaning on his shoulder.
“How far away are we?”
Slightly, subconsciously, Benji leaned closer over to Eli and hummed while looking over the map. Crossed checked it with his own sheet, then frowned.
"Looks like we're pretty far -- almost halfway across the dorms..."
Benji could feel his chest tightening, just slightly, from hearing himself say that outloud. What he was worried about the most, however, was Eli getting upset by this. Benji always hated seeing Eli get upset, over anything. So, he quickly pipped up, trying his best to sound optimistic, as per usual,
"But hey! Even if we can't get them to change anything, at least we can still walk to see each other," The very idea of not getting to room with Eli made Benji want to curse up a storm, but their hands would be tied. Having to share a room with someone else, he would learn to stomach - but possibly getting suspended or expelled for trying to defy the staff, was even worse. That meant he'd be barred from seeing Eli, for keeps. No thank you. | © seadra of gs |

we'll never be alone i'm gonna build you a house. i'm gonna build you a wall, to keep you safe from it all. just close your eyes. | Halfway across the dorms.
It kept echoing in his mind, getting fainter with each chant of the mantra before it drifted and Eli was left with a slight curve of his lips whilst his widened eyes went totally blank. Mayhaps he had a moment of internal screaming and imagining scrapping the poor principal off his shoes, but nonetheless, his Benji calmed him down. He needn’t throw a fit so soon into the year even if he decided already it was going to suck balls.
Ducking his head down to rest his forehead on his perched arm, he exhaled a long sigh… using his free hand to scratch the back of his neck where his hair was shortest. Straightening back up, he managed his best smile, however, deciding that if he couldn’t room with Benji he could still unofficially move himself in if it called for such circumstances. The dorm heads and staff didn’t need to know about the swap.
“It won’t be the same,” he murmured, feeling the need for his negative input to remind Benji that he still had to miss him regardless! “But I suppose we’ll live…” It wouldn’t be too much different than the summer, right? Only he had been dying to come back to school just for this reason... there wasn’t else much he could do besides pray that they can switch or they’ll be roomies again for senior year. | © seadra of gs |

stand by my side I'm gonna build you a house I'm gonna build you a wall To keep you safe from it all Take my hand I'll lead you and we'll never be alone | At Eli's slight murmur about how this all wouldn't be the same, Benji felt a conflict of emotion. Firstly, he felt worried, that Eli was pretty upset by this. Secondly, Benji felt... glad. Happy that this was as big a deal to Eli as it was to Benji. Now that he took a moment to consider, he wasn't sure how he would have reacted if Eli had just shrugged it off and was instantly okay with it. Benji couldn't rightly say which idea was worse.
“But I suppose we'll live...”
Benji couldn't help his own smile from surfacing, especially at Eli's smile shining through. He reached out, playfully pushing on Eli's other arm, a light chuckle breathing from him,
"I'll just have to sneak over to you,"
There was a light teasing to his voice; how he often sounded, whenever just bothering Eli. It was really fun, poking at the other teen -- no harm was meant. Most others who heard them might think they were being cruel, but Benji knew that Eli knew. By this point, he hoped Eli always knew. They'd never actually gotten into a real, proper disagreement, before; just the idea of it caused Benji to shudder.

He just hoped it was worth cooling off from the annoyance so quickly rather than kicking up the tantrum he wanted to.
Side-stepping as Benji pushed him, a brief laugh was automatic to Elijah. Airy but not lasting perhaps as long as it usually would. Typical he would take to enact revenge immediately. Instead, he approached closer, deciding clinging to him was better than getting pushed away or chased at the moment. His smile kept.
“Of course,” he hummed. If it wasn’t Benji coming to his place, it would be him going to his. “Game nights have to happen, after all.” He gave a cheeky grin at that. Maybe they’d get lucky, too, and have the same class at the end of the day—or at least somewhere near—so they could still grab dinner sometimes on the way back.

stand by my side I'm gonna build you a house I'm gonna build you a wall To keep you safe from it all Take my hand I'll lead you and we'll never be alone | Oh yes, many game nights were going to be happening -- the only way they wouldn't happen was if Benji or Eli were somehow both shoved into the hospital. Heck, even then, Benji was certain they'd find some way. Game nights, much like lunches together, were just a staple between them. Benji felt that if they didn't at least have gaming a few nights a week, he might just go into withdrawals. Heh, what a bizarre thought. Video game shakes. Jeeze.
“Don’t tell me our lunch shifts are different too, though.”
Uh. Actually, Benji hadn't even considered that. Again, he felt his stomach metaphorically drop, and he quickly dug out his schedule to check over the time.
"Mine's at around 11:54 through to 12:20. Yours?"
Benji felt himself really, really hoping that Eli would say 'same', as he glanced up at him. Tentatively, as though looking over at Eli might somehow jinx their luck. Benji wondered if perhaps they had screwed themselves over by just assuming they had been roommates again, without bothering to actually check first. Were they really to blame though? If anything, it was the faculties' fault, in a way.
They must have knew what they were doing, sticking two people together for that many years, only to suddenly place them in separate areas, without so much a word. Not that Benji felt entitled to anything-- but, even so-- augh no. He was just being weird about this. Bad Benji; shake it off. Focus on Eli.

we'll never be alone i'm gonna build you a house. i'm gonna build you a wall, to keep you safe from it all. just close your eyes. | He could tolerate the room change. Not approve of it, in the slightest, but tolerate it well enough. Yet if there was further swapped arrangements he would likely be well into complaining for hours and needing to slay “innocent” zombies for days until he got over it. Elijah wasn’t good at adapting. Elijah liked things to stay the same. He was content when good things stayed good and weren’t messed with. It was difficult to see the optimistic viewpoint in all of this.
“Oh.” He doesn’t say anything else following Benji’s reveal of his lunch times, idly flicking through his papers that he poorly stapled together—else he knew he would lose them. Though he did not wish to think their shifts were different in the least, he mentally prepared himself for the worst. Only relaxing his tensed shoulders once he read that they were the same. He could probably lift his friend up and spin him in a circle right there in the hallway, but of course, he refrained.
“Yeah, they’re the same.” Thankfully. He acted casual despite silently praising the gods. Emotional rollercoaster over and done with, yes? He’d much rather keep with smiling than his feels thrown around like a ragdoll. | © seadra of gs |

stand by my side I'm gonna build you a house I'm gonna build you a wall To keep you safe from it all Take my hand I'll lead you and we'll never be alone | There was an undeniable harsh beat of his heart; pounding against his chest, lightly, deeply, as Benji tried to steel himself for the answer. Was it a no? Oh, it had better darn well not be. He wasn't sure how he'd handle not only having their rooms messed with, but their lunches too. Benji adored eating with Eli, it was great; sometimes they even shared the same meal, too lazy to grab individual plates.
“Yeah, they’re the same.”
He let out a relieved sigh he hadn't consciously realized he had been holding. Oh, thank freaking God for that. Benji was so relieved, he actually did reach out and hug Eli; arms wrapping around his neck, he grinned, letting out a tiny shout of approval, one that wouldn't draw the attention of others. Far as he was concerned, it was only he and Eli in the hall right now.
"That's great! Ugh, I would've hated having to try and sneak around our lunches too,"
He briefly stuck his tongue out at Eli while backing away, though felt overcome with an urge to immediately move back and hold him more. It was very fleeting, and Benji didn't bother to focus on that. He cleared his throat, rocking lightly on his heels. Benji knew they had to separate to go over to their dorms eventually, buuut they could wait a bit longer, couldn't they?
"Speaking of games, we should go to the arcade!" Benji felt it'd be better to get out of the dorms for now, into a different environment. Somewhere that wouldn't constantly remind him, nagging, how he and Eli weren't sharing their rooms at all. Maybe ever again, for the rest of their time at the Academy. | © seadra of gs |

we'll never be alone i'm gonna build you a house. i'm gonna build you a wall, to keep you safe from it all. just close your eyes. This post sorta sucks... sorry. ; ; | Well. That was worth it.
They hugged often, it wasn’t that per say. Usually, however, it was Eli hanging off of Benji—unwilling to move and using him akin to a human arm rest (affectionately, of course). So every time it was Benji that initiated the hug, it was like an extra treat to observe. The smile he wore then was more-so genuine. Tension wanned for the moment they shared their embrace, and Eli welcomed it… returned it without hesitance.
His hands lingered on the shorter man’s shoulders for a brief moment before it was no longer. He hadn’t let the touch haunt, but savored it like a starved stray fed his first meal in weeks. Relaxing back but now with a grin that didn’t seem quite so forced, Eli melted—willing going with the flow of the excitement that yeah, they weren’t gonna be separated for everything after all. Even snickered and returned Benji’s banter by sticking out his own tongue.
“We woulda worked it out.” A promise to the future if it did, by cursed happened. He would be determined enough to skip class if he really needed to, to squeeze in at least one lunch every now and then with Benji. It wouldn’t be the same, otherwise.
Eli hadn’t been ready to part either, just yet… having planned to at least stick around and help Benji settle into the new dorms. Yet the suggestion to head to the arcade didn’t sound too bad either. It’d get their mind off things, least for a few hours and make this situation a bit more okay. A reminder that regardless of how things changed, they’d still be friends.
“Couple hours won’t hurt,” he grinned; already going to give ‘em a nudge and lead the way. | © seadra of gs |

stand by my side I'm gonna build you a house I'm gonna build you a wall To keep you safe from it all Take my hand I'll lead you and we'll never be alone | “We woulda worked it out.”
It was a weird thing, sort of funny too. Even though he knew, by now, without a doubt, that Eli was so invested in their friendship, in him -- it still made Benji feel beside himself. To hear Eli say such a thing, with so much belief and genuine want. Benji felt like, okay, maybe the dorm situation wasn't the best thing that could happen, but to know, to be reminded of again, that Eli would fight just as hard as Benji would, to stick with him...
Well, that was something awesome. Something beyond words, that Benji couldn't even begin to try and explain, much to himself or even out loud. It was just this feeling, deep inside. This unspoken agreement, that had him nodding along when Eli said such a thing. Because, yes, they would have; heck, Benji would have pushed tooth and nail to find time to spend with Eli. So long as it didn't result in either of them getting expelled, pulled even further from the other, then he would be willing.
“Couple hours won’t hurt.”
Benji nudged back, when Eli gently moved him - he knew that signal. More than happy to, he pivoted on his heel and began leading the way, stride almost goofy in it's assured nature. He wouldn't help that right now - didn't want to - because he was just happy. Just grateful that Eli had this sort of way, this sort of ability, to help Benji pull out of whatever funk he might've almost found himself in.
Eli really is amazing. Those thoughts permeated his mind as he led the way out of the dormitory. | © seadra of gs |

Perhaps it was the giddiness of that that pushed both into this blissful mood. Elijah was a touch shamefully pleased just by Benji’s willing hug. It was difficult to stay upset when your friend for years gave you a hug to calm you down. He ignored the feeling in his gut and the longing to slow his pace so he could loop an arm around his companion.
Benji’s nudge back was just enough to keep him further on his feet. Stable. Eli was rock, but Benji was his anchor. Strange how throughout the years that he had changed from someone forcibly independent to a puppy willing to follow someone else around without qualms. It was what he wanted, deep down. Yet of course, he didn’t quite admit it to himself—let alone aloud. So he made certain to keep stride with Benji, rounding their way out of the dormitory in ease with only a few playful pokes and small talk about the classes they had.

"Soo,"
“Wanna make a bet?”
Oh. Oh it was on. Benji grinned back at Eli, that mischievous expression not only crossing his eyes, but pretty much his entire facial structure. If there was something Benji loved, it was betting; it was fooling around with Eli and trying to beat him at things. Especially video games -- he had won, and lost, more money to that alone than he could rightly count over the last few years.
"Only if you're ready to lose it, Bro."
His voice wavered between amused and smugly confident. Of course, he was only doing this to bother Eli; to start that bantering, again. Benji felt like sometimes he couldn't go five minutes without quipping something to Eli, in order to see his response and reaction. Even though he knew Eli for so long, at points, even Benji was surprised by how Eli would reply. That was what made this all so interesting -- well, aside Eli himself, of course.
Wanting to bug him even more, Benji purposefully sped up his walking speed, shorter legs working double time to push forward, away from Eli. A little, short, race of sorts. | © seadra of gs |
