INTO THE NOTHING LEAVE ME AT THE BOTTOM WHERE THERE'S NOTHING LEFT His footsteps echoed around him. The cheap plastic wheels attached to his suitcases clicked and clacked behind him. For a moment, it was all that he heard. They were the only noises that reached his ears as he strode down the hallway of the students dormitory. The ceiling lighting above him cast off a dull, yellowish-white, illumination against the ugly gray flooring beneath his feet. And in the distance a single light lightly buzzed as it flickered on and off, casting shadows of gloom in an already poorly lit area. It matched his mood perfectly; the somberness, the bitterness, the resentment… everything.
Outside, upon his arrival, he had stepped out of the taxi to gaze up at the dark evening sky—ominous gray clouds had rolled in and lightning had silently pierced the sky from a distance away. The light rumble of thunder sounded what felt like minutes later as he had reached to open the door to the dorms.
His life…
Brendon stopped before room number fifty-two, his amber gaze hooded as he stared impassively at the off white coloring of the door. His life…? He didn’t have one. He had nothing. He was nothing. The thought caused the teenager’s expression to harden into a cynical mask of indifference. He reached into his jean pocket and retrieved the key he had been given for his room.
The door creaked as he opened it and the key awkwardly stuck within the keyhole as he attempted to pull it free. The room before him was pitch black with the exception of a distant street lamp seen from within a set of large windows at the end of the bedroom. Brendon lifted his hand and dragged it along the wall until he came in contact with the light switch. With a flick, light flooded the entranceway.
“Hello?” Brendon asked the room dully as he continued to stand in the doorway, the door wide open, and the light from the hall casting down over his form. There had been a hint of sarcasm within his tone as it was more than obvious no one was here.
Brendon pulled both of his suitcases into the room and placed them against the wall, off to the side. He reached for the keys still jammed within the keyhole and jiggled with them for a good few seconds before it pulled loose. As he stepped inside, he closed the door behind him, and finally began to peer around at his new… ‘home’. Where would he even be after this? Who would take him in next? Thoughts for another day, he supposed.
A door leading into the bathroom was to his left and a small kitchen was to his right. There were also a few built in shelves for storage and beyond that the hallway opened up into the large main room of the dorm. Brendon stepped forward and reached along the wall as he entered the larger room. He flicked the lights on and the entire bedroom became bathed in white light. One half of the room was occupied while the other half was completely bare aside from the cheap, generic, wooden furniture.
Great…, he thought absently to himself as he walked forward and ran his fingers over his bare dresser and computer desk. There was a tack-board up on the wall for him to use. He could see that his roommate had already put his own to use with various notes. He could see his books, his pencil holder, pens, markers, highlighters, a fan beside his bed, and suitcases underneath.
Who even went to an academy for high school? Who even did that? He inwardly thought, one hand coiling into a fist as he grew bitter and angry. What would become of him? What if he just… didn’t give a damn? What if he flunked and dropped out? Brendon let out a heavy sigh and slowly retreated back toward the far wall of the hallway where he had left his suitcases. He might as well unpack.

ᴅᴀʏ 1 | 9:00ᴘᴍ | ᴄʟᴏᴜᴅʏ sᴋɪᴇs Joshua’s gaze narrowed as he silently read over his essay. There were library books piled all over his workspace. Some were open while others remained closed. He had been here for hours working and the strain was beginning to weigh on him. The words started to become blurry and sentences began to mingle with each other. A sigh escaped him as he pinched the bridge of his nose before reaching for another book to read over the history he was quoting in his assignment.
The sound of a female student laughing caught his attention and he quickly brought his cold gaze towards her. She noticed him, but like most teenagers she didn’t care that she had disturbed him or anyone else within the library. Joshua had been attending this academy for over a year now and he had yet to see any real variations between students. No one stood out to him. They were all the same.
His expression hardened further as the persistent sound of her laughing began to grate on his nerves. Her amusement was soon followed by another female and male student that also accompanied her. But their mild laughter was cut short when another less patient student hushed them. Joshua despised those his own age. They acted like loud mindless sheep. Always blinding following whatever the media presented them with. There was little originality left in the world and that was one of many reasons why he chose to remain alone.
Joshua’s attention returned to his essay but the words continued to mingle. A pressure within his head was beginning to form and he knew that meant he needed a break. Everything around him was beginning to feel louder and more irritable to him now. The objects surrounding him felt as though they were closing in around him. An unpleasant but all too familiar sensation began forming within his chest.
These feelings…would never leave him. They were the same emotions that taunted him in that small godforsaken town he had been forced to live in. He had left that place behind and finally had the academic challenges he needed…but it changed nothing. He still felt trapped here…and that only served to rile up his inner anger.
Joshua exhaled roughly as he turned and began reaching into his bag until he found the only thing that seemed to temporarily ease his temper.

INTO THE NOTHING LEAVE ME AT THE BOTTOM WHERE THERE'S NOTHING LEFT The sound of the shower filled the small bathroom. A blanket of steam rose upward as it drifted from beyond the shower curtain, fogging the mirror hanging above the sink. Streams of hot water splashed down against Brendon’s back as he stood within the shower, both of his hands outstretched and pressed against the cool tile of the wall. The water cascaded down the back of his head, soaking his hair and sending droplets everywhere.
The teenager had unpacked his suitcases. He had set up his side of the bedroom, adorned his things on the computer desk and the dresser. He had set out his video games, his console, and 3DS. His blankets and sheets had been lain out and fitted to his bed. Everything… was set up and the reality was setting in. This was now his life. Regency Academy was where he was going to be for the next four years.
Rogan had personally seen to everything being set up for his freshmen year. He had a full schedule and had been enrolled into the soccer team. The thought caused both of his hands to coil into fists and inside of him he could feel the anger, the rage, building within his chest. He could feel the helplessness, the hopelessness, rising.
He didn’t want any of this. He didn’t want to be here. He didn’t want to be under the authority of Rogan and his tyrannical ways. Rogan wasn’t his father—he wasn’t his father, dammit…! Brendon punched the tile of the shower wall and leaned forward, pressing his forehead against the cold wetness clinging to the surface.
He… didn’t want any of this…

ᴅᴀʏ 1 | 9:00ᴘᴍ | ᴄʟᴏᴜᴅʏ sᴋɪᴇs The rich sound of music played within Joshua’s headphones as he rested against his chair and kept his eyes closed. He could hear nothing else…and see nothing else. The blackness within his vision coated his mind and helped push away his emotions.
Summer was coming to an end, but that hardly meant rest for the students within this academy. Certain students, himself included, had applied to receive assignments for their upcoming classes that were expected to be handed in at the beginning of the semester. Joshua had completed most of his work, but despite his long hours he still had yet to finish everything. This essay for English was the final piece he needed.
Slowly his eyes opened and began taking in his surroundings. The sky outside was an ominous black due to the clouds blocking out the moon. Joshua looked to the clock upon the library wall. It would be one more hour until the library closed and he intended to remain here until that time. There had been a lot more students surrounding him when he had first arrived, but that number had slowly dwindled into nothing. A slow breath escaped him as he reached for his phone and turned off his music. He then removed his headphones, folded them in half and placed them back inside his bag.
He hadn’t given himself very much time to relax, but only because he did not wish to waste the remaining time he had. For now he planned to set aside his essay and instead focus on math. He had no owing assignments for his upcoming math class. He was merely familiarizing himself with the formula used.
However, his plans were abruptly changed…when he realized that he had left his calculator within his room. Joshua’s expression hardened disapprovingly as he mentally scolded himself and quickly began packing up his things. It had been an accident on his part, but one that could easily cost him if his new roommate decided to steal it. The school had rules and regulations to prevent theft. But Joshua was not quelled by such things and would never trust strangers with his property.
He drew the strap to his bag over his shoulder and picked up the remaining text books that wouldn’t fit inside before hastily leaving. His expression was unfriendly as he moved through the halls and towards his room.

INTO THE NOTHING LEAVE ME AT THE BOTTOM WHERE THERE'S NOTHING LEFT Brendon turned the handle of the nozzle into the off position and then stepped out of the shower. The thick plastic of the curtains caused the white rings to grind against the metal pole as he pushed them off to one side and reached for the towel he had brought in with him. Aside from the last excess of water that was pooling down the drain behind him… everything else was quiet. And that quietness was unsettling. He hated new places. He hated the creaks and groans the walls and flooring usually made. And he hated the irrational fear that swelled up within him… the feeling of being unsafe. The feeling of needing to lock the doors, to keep all the lights on: he had done it all.
He took the towel and threw it over top his head to begin rubbing his hair free of any excess water. As he walked forward and toward the sleepwear he had brought into the bathroom, he glanced up toward the mirror but couldn’t see his reflection through the fog that had clouded the entire surface.
However, his attention was soon brought toward the locked door of the bathroom when he heard the sound of the front door opening. His heart seized up—but he instantly hardened himself. He could feel the sickness turning a knot within his stomach, but beyond that he had managed to clamp down on all of his emotions. It was obviously his roommate.
Still, Brendon stepped forward and unlatched the lock on his bathroom door. He pushed it open and forced himself to take a look into the dorm room to quell any worries that might have been plaguing him. With one hand grasped on the towel he was using to cover his lower body and the door blocking out most of the view of him, his amber gaze searched the dorm until falling upon the person who had entered.

ᴅᴀʏ 1 | 9:00ᴘᴍ | ᴄʟᴏᴜᴅʏ sᴋɪᴇs Joshua stepped before his door and immediately began opening it. The key tried to stick awkwardly, but Joshua wasted no time forcing it to turn. He was instantly met with the savory scent from the shower. It filled his senses more noticeably than before and that caused his attention to shift towards the bathroom door. He had been expecting his roommate…and yet…something felt different…
It was at that moment he began noticing how every last light within their dorm had been turned on. His expression hardened as he slipped from his shoes and entered the bedroom area. As suspected his new roommate had arrived and unpacked…
Joshua could feel tension with his chest…but he couldn’t decipher the meaning behind it. He drew his shoulder bag from his body and rested it on his desk. Everything in his room had remained untouched…right down to his calculator.
He could hear movement within the bathroom as he stepped closer to his roommate’s belongings to carefully look them over. But his attention was instantly stolen when the door to the bathroom began opening. His emerald gaze moved towards the small crack that had been made and his expression remained stern as his eyes connected with his roommate.
His entire body became rigid as he caught sight of the young man peering back towards him. The tension from before amplified and for a moment he felt paralyzed by it.

INTO THE NOTHING LEAVE ME AT THE BOTTOM WHERE THERE'S NOTHING LEFT His head peeked out from within the confines of the bathroom as his narrowed gaze flickered through the still lit dorm room. It hadn’t taken him long to spot the other student—catching sight of him standing before his computer desk and the things he had unpacked adorning it. Their gazes instantly snapped to one another and Brendon’s stomach tightened as he physically felt the tension charging the air between them. Within his chest he could feel his heart strain but he kept his expression neutral if not a tad intense as his narrowed amber gaze remained on the other.
“…Are you my roommate?” He asked him, his voice careful and slow and his tone deep.

ᴅᴀʏ 1 | 9:00ᴘᴍ | ᴄʟᴏᴜᴅʏ sᴋɪᴇs Never before had he been stunned into silence and yet…here he was frozen. His roommate carried forth the conversation with ease. Even his voice seemed to stir something within him, but that was soon overridden with frustration.
What was wrong with him?
A frown began etching into his features as he fought to draw himself from this foolish moment. But his mind wouldn’t allow him to. He instead kept concentrating on what he could see…and even something as small as the tone of his voice. Silence was spreading between them as Joshua warred with himself. He clenched his jaw and tried to force himself to speak…but nothing came.
Instead…his gaze merely lowered towards the young man’s exposed shoulder. He could see the water droplets still present on his skin from his shower...

INTO THE NOTHING LEAVE ME AT THE BOTTOM WHERE THERE'S NOTHING LEFT Silence… was the only answer he received in return. The feeling of his heart pounding was a very strange sensation for Brendon and one that he mostly ignored. Instead, he kept all of his attention on his other person within the room. He remained tense and his gaze narrow as he took in the other’s… features. He could see the startling and piercing green of his eyes… and the intensity within them. But, the silence was suffocating. It was causing a nervousness to break through within him: an emotion that wasn’t welcome.
Brendon swallowed hard against the dryness that had become his throat. It seemed that all he could do was watch through the silence as the other student’s gaze began to drift lower and take in more of him—trying to see past the door, past the wall, that shielded the rest of his naked body. He was getting cold as the steam and heated air slipped through the cracks and mixed with the colder temperature of the rest of the dorm.
“Are you my roommate?” He insisted again and this time with more force in his tone as his grip around the bathroom’s doorknob tightened considerably.

ᴅᴀʏ 1 | 9:00ᴘᴍ | ᴄʟᴏᴜᴅʏ sᴋɪᴇs “Are you my roommate?”
His aggressive question jolted Joshua from his thoughts but it didn’t quell what he was feeling. He was making a fool out of himself…and that only served to fuel his rising temper. His own aggression was being directed onto himself, but also the cause of this scene.
Joshua held no understanding of the situation and why this stranger had brought him such…uneasiness. His expression darkened until he was left glaring at the young man. He was angry with him for creating strife in his life.
Without a word he removed himself from the suffocating moment that engulfed him. His footsteps were hard against the floor as he walked past the bathroom and jerked open the front door to leave.

INTO THE NOTHING LEAVE ME AT THE BOTTOM WHERE THERE'S NOTHING LEFT What… had happened? The tautness within Brendon’s features intensified and every muscle in his body strained as he watched the other male leave the dorm room. He was left standing within the bathroom, the door cracked, his body cold and wet… and he confused. Shaken.
Brendon slowly leaned back and softly clicked the bathroom door closed. He remained where he was standing for a long while, merely staring down at the closed bathroom door before him as his grip around the knob remained. Within his mind he couldn’t shake the startling image of the other male. His piercing green eyes…
He. He shouldn’t have cared. Brendon took in a slow but deep breath and closed his eyes. He allowed the world around him to disappear and focused instead on his thoughts and his composure. He didn’t care. If that guy was his roommate then so be it. He wouldn’t allow it to effect him in any way.
With that new resolve in mind, Brendon slowly opened his eyes and only briefly allowed his gaze to linger on the bathroom door before he turned and made his way over toward the sink counter where he had lain his clothes for bed. Mind clear and expression stern, Brendon dried himself off and dressed himself.
He didn’t care about anything or anyone. He wasn’t going to. Embarrassment? Nervousness? Neither of those emotions should have had anything to do with him. Bafflement, confusion, wonder—nothing. Nothing.
He refused to give into any of it.

ᴅᴀʏ 1 | 9:00ᴘᴍ | ᴄʟᴏᴜᴅʏ sᴋɪᴇs Joshua could hear the echo of the door slamming behind him and he could feel the eyes of bewildered students staring at him. His features were twisted into a scowl as he stepped forward and left the dormitory building. The cold night air quickly embraced his body as he stepped outside and it was only then that he realized just how on fire he was.
The physical effect only further insulted him as he thought back to the scene within his own room. No one caused him to react like that…and the fact that his roommate had…enraged him.
Joshua’s pace began to slow to a stop as he turned and looked back to the building that occupied all regency students. He was letting a stranger control him by losing his temper like this. His features became stern as he took in a deep breath and exhaled carefully.
He was not one to lose control unless he wanted to. What was he doing out here? He was acting like a child who was upset by something they couldn’t comprehend. He was no child and refused to allow anyone to hold such an effect over him. That boy would cause him no more trouble because Joshua would not allow it.
He was not weak. He was not a coward.
Joshua’s thoughts caused his expression to harden as he started back towards the dormitory. He paused before his room and began reaching into his pockets to withdraw his dorm room key…but he soon realized…that he had left everything inside his room. His emerald gaze narrowed angrily as he reached up to knock but he soon lowered his fist out of sheer stubbornness.
He was not going to knock and humiliate himself further. He would wait until his roommate opened the door himself and he didn’t care if that took all night.

INTO THE NOTHING LEAVE ME AT THE BOTTOM WHERE THERE'S NOTHING LEFT Brendon exited the bathroom and headed into the larger room which made up roughly ninety percent of the dorm. His amber gaze slowly lowered down toward the belongings the other male had brought in with him and it confirmed that he was indeed his roommate. The evidence and the fact caused the brunette to pause by the office chair before the computer desk. He… found himself looking over his things: from his book bag, to his books, to the keychain adorning two bronze keys.
“…,” Brendon stared down at the contents for a long minute before he turned more fully toward the belongings. Slowly, he reached and retrieved the keychain placing it into the palm of his hand as he examined it. …What had happened? What had caused his roommate to become as angry as he had? Why had he stormed out without answering him, without his belongings, without his room key?
…And… what was his name? Brendon felt his heartbeat pick up somewhat as well as his breathing as he turned his gaze to the student’s backpack once more. The fifteen year old hardened his heart and his emotions—and reached for the bag. His body filled with a mild rush of adrenaline as he unfastened the belt loops and opened the black flap. W-What was he doing? He felt almost… crazy… as he brought both of his hands into the depths of the other’s bag and began to sift through the folders and other contents inside.
Emotion, stress, and strain began to plague him, causing his heart to pound and his breathing to heighten. And, in the end, he did it all for nothing—practically near damn tears, Brendon removed his hands and quickly pulled the flap closed resealing the leather straps shortly thereafter.
“G-God, what the hell…,” He mumbled out and the shakiness of his voice was as evident as the shaking of his fingers. He reached out to grasp the back of the office chair firmly while his heart continued to pound away within his chest. He hadn’t even gotten what he had been looking for. He had chickened out before he could pull a sheet free and discover his roommate’s name.
“Dammit… what the hell…,” He cursed under his breath and stepped away from the other’s belongings. Get a grip will you, he thought bitterly as he moved to his bed. He lowered down and rested on his back, bringing one of his arms up over his face to block out the light of the room.

ᴅᴀʏ 1 | 9:00ᴘᴍ | ᴄʟᴏᴜᴅʏ sᴋɪᴇs Joshua moved to press his back firmly against an empty wall as he silently waited. He was still extremely angry but this time it wouldn’t send him running. His previous actions had been cowardly and the fact that he had forgotten his things was only further evidence of his impudence. He had made mistakes in the past but nothing felt as humiliating as this.
His previous roommate had angered him as well, but that was only because of his lack of human decency to clean up after himself. But that seemed common among men. His emerald gaze shifted towards the few students staring at him from within the hall. He knew that he was no doubt the topic of discussion but it held little effect on him. As long as they left him alone they could say whatever they wanted.
Joshua’s attention shifted from the stray students within the hall when he heard the mumbling of his roommate’s voice. The sound instantly caused him to tense and look towards his door…but he couldn’t make out anything the boy was saying. However… his voice only served as a reminder of how he had reacted before and that caused his heart to squeeze with irritation.
“I’m serious leave him alone. He’s totally not worth it,” a female voice echoed within the hallways, but Joshua ignored her. That is…until her male friend actually began approaching him. It didn’t matter how unfriendly he appeared…there would always be those stupid enough to approach him. Joshua purposely kept his gaze away from the other student as he began talking to him.
“Hey uh…” the male paused as he tried to recall his name and soon waited as though Joshua would answer him. But he said nothing to him and instead glared towards an empty space in the hall.
“What you get locked out of your room, man?” he asked still trying to make conversation. Joshua’s patience had already been worn thin today and he had little to spare for this persistent student.
“Why don’t you just—” the guy began as he reached forward to actually knock on the door himself. But his attempt was abruptly cut off when Joshua reached out to grasp onto his wrist.
“What the f***?”
Joshua’s jaw tightened as he glared down at the other student who held little care for his privacy. In one swift movement he jerked the kid’s wrist back but his actions only riled up the other teens temper. The student glanced towards his friends and without a word he actually tried to knock again. Anger exploded within Joshua's chest as he actually grabbed the kid’s collar and shoved him into a nearby wall.
“Mind your own business,” Joshua snapped darkly at the other kid and caused his friends to instantly call out towards him. They started forward but were more interested in watching the scene than actually helping their so called friend.

INTO THE NOTHING LEAVE ME AT THE BOTTOM WHERE THERE'S NOTHING LEFT Brendon remained as he was, motionless atop his bed, as the minutes ticked by. As he laid there with his eyes closed and his arm shading the ceiling light, he began to hear the distant sound of voices from outside the dorm room within the hallway. The noises caught his attention and became a focus point for him. But, they spawned little other action from the fifteen year old as he continued to rest in his bed.
“What the f***?”
Slowly, Brendon retracted his arm and opened his eyes to stare up listlessly at the ceiling. His first initial thought hadn’t been of his roommate’s involvement but as the commotion became louder—and more apparently outside of the door—his attention and senses heightened. And when a loud thud of sorts pounded into the nearby wall Brendon could feel his heart take off.
He jerked up into a seated position and didn’t hesitate to stand and make his way toward the front door. What if it was him? What if it was his roommate—Why should he even care, was the better question. Yet, instinct seemed to take over when he opened the front door and stepped into the doorway of room fifty two.
“What the f*** is your problem!?”
Brendon’s gaze riveted onto the scene before him. While at first numb—anger swelled within his smaller body and quickly rose to the surface, blinding his judgment, his rational: “What are you doing!?” He snapped aggressively at his roommate.
