I USED TO TRUST THE MEDIA TO TELL ME THE TRUTH
POSITIVE - patient - considerate - honest - diligent - caring - polite If you get past the scowl on his face, Jae seems to be a model student. He's the sort to spend most of his free time doing homework, studying, or getting ahead on the project or paper due a month from the time it's announced; some might call him an over-achiever, but the methodical working keeps him grounded. Academics aside, he is also polite and thoughtful sort. He can rarely make himself walk past someone who needs help, and is the kind of kid who would get stuck listening to an elder ramble about their youth for hours because he helped them get something down from a shelf in the store. Despite his youth, Jae seems to have picked up many of his mother's doting habits. Though these habits can be more subtle, it's only a matter of time and growing closeness with the boy that he'll start almost unconsciously mothering someone. It can range from questioning what they're up to or how things are going (schoolwork? social life? how was that test I told you you should have studied more), to full-blown fixing their clothes and hair and making them a lunch. He might blame it on the fact that he spent most of his youth watching over his younger cousins, but it doesn't change the fact that he tries to take in just about any stray on the street who gives him the time of day. | LIKES - flowers - baking - puzzle games - organization - cute animals and objects DISLIKES - cold temperatures - flakiness - overly-sweet food and drink - wasting energy - lying (being lied to) | NEGATIVE - anxious - blunt - stubborn - overbearing - insecure - unapproachable Jae's default setting is 'anxious'. Without something to distract or ease him, he's usually cautious and not very talkative with others. With his face usually set into something of a glare or grimace, he doesn't come off as someone friendly at all. Though his expression in and of itself worries him, he has also found that it's brought him some relief in that people are repelled from trying to speak to him; less people to interact with just means less stress for him to deal with, less words to fumble over trying to respond to them. Even though he dotes on others, he seems to withdraw from receiving the same sort of treatment from others. In fact, Jae almost seems to fear closeness with other people. With a low self-esteem and lots of insecurities to pick at, he constantly worries that those close to him with realize that he's a suffocating, needy child, and thus that he's better off keeping them at an arm's length. |

[PTab=BIOGRAPHY]
BUT NOW I'VE SEEN THE PAY-OFFS EVERYWHERE I LOOK
history lesson
Jae's mother was single when she had him, her fiance and his father having left her after the news of her pregnancy. It was a rough beginning, the young mom finding herself having to borrow money from her sister to keep rent until Jae was old enough to be left with a neighbor to watch him while she went back to work. His first four years of life were spent this way, until eventually Jae's grandmother passed, leaving her home to her daughter.
The next leg of Jae's life was spent being watched by his aunt, and being the oldest of three children now in his grandmother's old home. Though he soon started going to school, he went straight home, did his homework, and then went right to entertaining the younger boy and girl who eagerly followed him around the house. Their time spent together only grew when they were old enough to go to school with him as well, the boy even trying to help them with their schoolwork when he didn't have his own to do, and he himself being taken under the wings of his mother and aunt and learning housekeeping and (later on) cooking skills from them.
Needless to say, he had been very family-oriented at a young age. In fact, he had very few friends outside of his two younger cousins, and those he did have were only really seen at recess. He never made time for play dates outside of school, and his lack of connections only became apparent to him when his aunt and cousins moved out as he entered junior high, and he suddenly found himself alone. Without his cousins and aunt around to fill in the gaps, Jae found his usual routine feeling rather empty. His house was quiet coming back, and he was greeted with a sticky note with instructions on heating up food and a vague time frame of when his mother would be home.
He found himself going through the motions, his lonely after school life spent keeping up with his work and taking up hobbies around his house, like tending to the plants on their back porch. The friends he had at school were rarely seen outside of it, but he grew relatively indifferent to it-- at least, he wanted to convince himself that he did. There was always a longing that he had, but the idea of trying to be more outgoing and open up to others made his chest tighten and his hands shake, so he never let himself act on it.
Though he felt tied to a quiet and lonely life, his mother had come to him toward the end of his middle school years and told him of an academy that would help him excel in his studies; a place where he would be able to live where he went to school and would be cared for. Though he feared the sudden change form his lackadaisical, hum-drum lifestyle, Jae also saw it as an opportunity to try to step out of the withdrawn space he'd closed himself in-- and even if that didn't work out, he told himself, better schooling definitely wouldn't hurt him for whatever path he decided to take in life.
