INTO THE NOTHING LEAVE ME AT THE BOTTOM WHERE THERE'S NOTHING LEFT Directly after Brendon had stumbled back and his attention had riveted to the door, his roommate had instantly risen from his bed. In one swift motion, Joshua advanced on him. Brendon’s gaze quickly jerked back toward the other male and his heart seized within his chest as he watched him purposely close the distance between them and take hold of one of his wrists.
While Joshua appeared to hold no care for the person outside of their door, Brendon on the other hand had been thrown from his comfort zone. The thought of someone else present caused him to withdraw into himself and Joshua’s forceful nature made him retaliate. He attempted to jerk his wrist out of his hold and sever the contact and the strife between them.
“Someone’s at the door,” He bit out between clenched teeth.

ᴅᴀʏ 1 | 9:00ᴘᴍ | ᴄʟᴏᴜᴅʏ sᴋɪᴇs Joshua tensed when his roommate tried to yank his hand away. He lost his grip on him and quickly attempted to grab him once more. But his roommate stubbornly avoided his hold and pushed past him in order to open the door himself.
Fine…if the boy wanted to expose himself further than Joshua by all means would allow him.

INTO THE NOTHING LEAVE ME AT THE BOTTOM WHERE THERE'S NOTHING LEFT Joshua immediately moved to try and grasp onto his wrist a second time but Brendon reacted almost instantly. He jerked his arm away and sent his roommate a glare of anger and contempt. And then, just as quickly, he stormed off in the direction of the front door. For once, his roommate allowed him the space he needed to breathe.
Brendon stopped before the door and didn’t hesitate to reach out, grip the knob, and jerk the door open. He was greeted with a man on the other side who had slicked back black hair and thin glasses. The guy was dressed casually and appeared to be around their age—perhaps a senior in the school.
“I’m here for a quick sweep-through of the dorm,” The student informed him but the expression he wore quickly became stiff the moment his dark brown gaze caught sight of Joshua further inside the room. “Hm. Is it all right if I come in?”

ᴅᴀʏ 1 | 9:00ᴘᴍ | ᴄʟᴏᴜᴅʏ sᴋɪᴇs Why had he even bothered to try and stop him in the first place? Was he trying to be considerate of the other male? Joshua’s expression hardened further as he thought about the scene that had just taken place a moment ago. Why had he touched him so intimately? Just what had he been after? Anger arose within him as he thought back to their constant bantering and how easily his roommate enraged him. The tension inside of him was suffocating.
His piercing emerald gaze remained on his roommate even after the door opened. He ignored the other male’s presence entirely and was soon turning to retrieve his roommate’s damned keys. He didn’t care about either of them. If his roommate chose to leave now then he’d do nothing to stop him.
Nothing was different. He would treat him just as he treated everyone else. Joshua’s jaw clenched and his expression revealed his anger clearly as he reached behind his bed and gripped the boy’s keys. He moved to set them a bit roughly down onto his roommate's desk before finally facing the inspector.

INTO THE NOTHING LEAVE ME AT THE BOTTOM WHERE THERE'S NOTHING LEFT Unconsciously, Brendon’s gaze returned to his roommate as though he had unconsciously expected the other man to answer the question. When a brief silence mingled within the air, and his roommate turned to leave the area, Brendon didn’t hesitate to glance back toward the other student and finally answer him: “Sure, go ahead.”
Brendon absently brought his fingers through his already tousled hair and remained by the front door for a moment. Admittedly, as he stared out into the dim lighting of the hallway, he did receive the urge to just walk out. Joshua had tried to trap him inside his own damn room—and here was freedom. There were two problems with that philosophy however: one, he was currently in his pajamas and two, he didn’t have a pair of keys on him.
With a heavy sigh, Brendon reluctantly closed the door and aimlessly began down the hallway. The upperclassman had ventured off into the bathroom and Brendon could see Joshua on his bed attempting to retrieve the lost set of keys. An idea instantly sparked within him and he didn’t hesitate to step forward.
“Oh, you found them?” He asked Joshua casually—and purposefully. He held out his hand to retrieve the keys from his roommate. “I wonder how they got back there. Thanks, Joshua.”

ᴅᴀʏ 1 | 9:00ᴘᴍ | ᴄʟᴏᴜᴅʏ sᴋɪᴇs “Oh, you found them?”
Joshua paused as his roommate boldly stepped before him and actually held out his hand expectantly. This boy kept antagonizing him…and Joshua instantly wanted to retaliate…
His hold against the keys tightened and for a moment there was silence between them. But with much reluctance he brought the keys forward and dropped them into his hand. He…would not lose control of his temper again. He was done fighting and would treat him just as had his old roommate. There was no connection between them…no similarity…there was nothing between them.
The inspector stepped forward and faced the two roommates, but seemed to briefly look towards Joshua before looking to his roommate.
“I trust there have been no problems between you two?” He asked, but there seemed to be a knowing sarcasm within his voice. It was rather clear that he had little patience with Joshua.

INTO THE NOTHING LEAVE ME AT THE BOTTOM WHERE THERE'S NOTHING LEFT Brendon’s amber gaze remained sharp and narrowed as he glared up at his roommate, a smirk drawing on his lips. A brief but tense silence spread out between them before Joshua finally placed the keychain adorning two keys into his opened hand. The prospect of actually being able to leave the room dangled in the back of his mind and caused an anxiousness of sorts to come to life within him. He felt rushed to hurry while his chance was still here—he should leave, shouldn’t he? Brendon had no intention of requesting another roommate or even staying out all night never to return—but the chance of freedom and a display of control were both very appealing to him. He wanted Joshua to know and understand that he wasn’t going to play by his rules. He wasn’t going to be ruled over by him.
“I trust there have been no problems between you two?” The dark haired senior asked them and Brendon had to turn around in order to face him, mildly surprised by his sudden appearance. Still, he didn’t hesitate to move over to one of the drawers to his dresser in order to open it and pull out a pair of blue jeans.
“There has been a bit of competition but nothing too extreme,” Brendon commented and attempted to come off casually. However, a hard edge was returning to his tone and features. He hated being social with others. In fact, he all around just hated anyone. He didn’t want anything to do with them. But, he needed to act this damn farce… because of Joshua.
The thought caused him to glance back toward his roommate… and he stared at him for a long moment. Why didn’t he act the same way around him? He could have easily passed it off as the obvious—with what all had happened between them. But, the feelings… were also… different.
His thoughts caused a scowl to form on his features and the nasty look was directed at the culprit. He hadn’t felt alone, either—the unwilling and unwanted thought intruded his mind but as quickly as it came Brendon viciously shoved it out. Bullshit! That was utter bullcrap.
“I need to get dressed real quick but can you show me where the athletic center is on your way out?” Brendon purposely turned to ask the upperclassmen while he stepped forward and toward the bathroom.

ᴅᴀʏ 1 | 9:00ᴘᴍ | ᴄʟᴏᴜᴅʏ sᴋɪᴇs Joshua’s gaze was on his roommate as he watched him begin retrieving his clothes. He was going to leave now that he had an opening to…and Joshua didn’t care. His emerald gaze hardened further as the boy who was always so eager to challenge him answered the senior’s question.
“There has been a bit of competition but nothing too extreme.”
The senior seemed a bit intrigued by this information, but he didn’t ask any further questions. If anything he felt bad for him. Joshua failed to take in any of the inspector’s reaction and instead kept his gaze firmly on his retreating roommate.
His heart tightened and his form remained stiff when the boy’s burning amber gaze jerked towards him. Joshua was clearly fighting with himself and he knew all to well how visible it was on his face. Why was this boy so infuriating?
“I need to get dressed real quick but can you show me where the athletic center is on your way out?”
Joshua didn’t care that he was leaving…he knew this well…and yet…he couldn’t stop himself from stepping forward. His heart was thundering within his chest and his body felt hot all over again. His emotions should have exhausted him by now…but instead they kept fueling him with energy.
“Sure,” the senior replied and stepped forward to allow access to the bathroom. He then reluctantly made his way towards Joshua and proceeded to ask him some questions.
“Is there anything I should write down for maintenance regarding this room?”
Even now his eyes were following his roommate, but he forced himself to look at the inspector and answered his question.
“No.” He replied firmly.

INTO THE NOTHING LEAVE ME AT THE BOTTOM WHERE THERE'S NOTHING LEFT Brendon stepped into the bathroom and closed the door behind him. He tried to compose himself and ended up walking forward to lean over the sink and press his hands down against the rim in order to brace his weight. Inside of him he could feel an odd mixture of emotion. He could feel himself closing off at the idea of having to leave with this other person. The sensation was something actually familiar to him. But, at the same time… he was also really, really, irritated over his… ‘feelings’… in regards to Joshua. He felt conflicted. But, the better option right now would be to leave. He needed his space and he needed to… compose himself, clear his mind. He needed to be able to think about everything that had happened and… what it was that he was going to do.
After only that short pause for a break, Brendon shoved away from the sink and saw to removing his pajama pants in order to replace them instead with the jeans. The shirt itself was fine enough material to pass—and he really didn’t give a damn, honestly. Tossing the sleepwear bottoms onto the countertop beside the sink, Brendon didn’t hesitate to return to the larger portion of the room where the upperclassmen and Joshua were both located.

ᴅᴀʏ 1 | 9:00ᴘᴍ | ᴄʟᴏᴜᴅʏ sᴋɪᴇs His roommate wasted no time getting changed and didn’t even bother removing his sleepwear top. But Joshua was through with both of their company and relished in the idea of being alone. He would feel nothing else only relief from having solitude. But within the pit of his stomach he could still feel the anger coursing through his system…it never rested…it was always there taunting him… “All right, that concludes this inspection.” The senior returned and made his way over towards the door to prop it open as he waited to show the other boy out. Joshua said nothing as he watched his roommate leave.

INTO THE NOTHING LEAVE ME AT THE BOTTOM WHERE THERE'S NOTHING LEFT Brendon slowly made his way forward until he stood in place beside the dark-haired upperclassmen beside their front door while he concluded things for a last time. Brendon glanced back toward his roommate, Joshua, and caught the intensity of his stare. He could see the anger behind the piercing gaze of his emerald eyes. He could feel the intensity of his attention. And it caused Brendon to offer his roommate a rather bold and mocking smile as he gave him a wave good-bye.
“And boy do I have some questions for you about ‘roommate policy’,” Brendon taunted as he turned to the senior and spoke. The two of them headed out of the dorm room with the door closing behind them.

ᴅᴀʏ 1 | 9:00ᴘᴍ | ᴄʟᴏᴜᴅʏ sᴋɪᴇs Joshua watched as his roommate bid him farewell in the most obnoxious way possible. His eye twitched as his heart beat ragged on, but he refrained from moving. Even after the door finally closed behind them… Joshua remained stationed where he was despite every fiber of his being telling him the opposite. An unsteady breath escaped him as he physically shook with rage. But he stood his ground and waited until the wave of emotions passed him.
He wanted nothing to do with his roommate. Their entire meeting had been a waste of time. That boy was nothing but another face in the crowd. He was forgettable…

INTO THE NOTHING LEAVE ME AT THE BOTTOM WHERE THERE'S NOTHING LEFT It wasn’t long before Brendon’s features grew somber… and he could feel himself becoming disengaged from the other male. They two of them strolled down the long and narrow hallway and it hadn’t taken long for the upperclassmen to inquire about his bizarre statement.
“You said something about roommate policy?” The dark haired senior asked as he lifted a hand to adjust the glasses against the bridge of his nose. But, Brendon remained quiet for a long moment as he stared out listlessly in front of him. A deep frown had etched its way into his features and he looked unattached and almost bored now that he was finally apart of the outside world once more.
“…It was a joke,” He told the older student lamely and gave a careless shrug of his shoulders as he shoved his hands down into the pockets of his jeans. His shift in attitude apparently hadn’t gone unnoticed by the senior. However, the dark haired male didn’t bother to press the subject further.
It was a short walk to the end of the hallway and the front doors opened up to the darkness of the night. A few faint lights flickered to illuminate parts of the walkway through the campus grounds but the thick gray clouds made it unusually dark out.
As though the sky had purposely waited for this moment, the clouds opened up and a thick, heavy, rain began to pour down from the heavens. The sound of rain hitting the concrete and earth filled the silence that had loomed only seconds before, and a streak of lightning flashed through the sky.
“Well, whatever plans you had I think they just got cancelled,” His upperclassmen pointed out as they stood under the dry safety of the awning at the front of the dormitory entrance. “But if you look over there—,” he motioned with his arm and pointed at the shadowy silhouette of a building in the distance, “—that would be the athletic center.”
It took a while for Brendon to answer the man but when he finally did it was only a short, “…All right”. He didn’t attempt to carry on the conversation or go back inside. Instead he merely stood there at the steps, underneath the awning, as the wind blew through the campus and brought the mist of the rain to them.
“I’m going back inside now. You should too.”
“Go ahead without me.” Brendon crouched down close to the concrete of the steps and kept his gaze out toward the rain. “I wanted to be alone anyway.”

ᴅᴀʏ 1 | 9:00ᴘᴍ | ᴄʟᴏᴜᴅʏ sᴋɪᴇs Joshua lost count of the seconds that had passed since his roommate's departure. He could still feel the anger within him…but he had regained control of it. His emerald gaze finally shifted from the front door but his mind continued to taunt him with thoughts of that infuriating chocolate brown haired boy. His presence still lingered everywhere and served as a constant reminder that he would be sharing his living space with him for the remainder of the year.
A dark sound escaped him as Joshua stepped towards his dresser and yanked open his drawer. He then collected his own sleepwear and stepped into the bathroom. He wanted to rid this place of his roommate’s scent and instead suffocate it with his own.
The bathroom light flickered on slowly and revealed to him the laundry that had been carelessly left on the counter. Joshua’s eyebrows drew into a frown as he clamped his fist around the material and stared down at them. He cared nothing for his roommate or his things… but even as those thoughts echoed within his mind…Joshua’s attention lingered on the boy’s pants.
What was his name…?
The question was unwelcomed and instantly flared up his temper again. He no longer wanted his name or to know anything else about him. Joshua’s grip around the pants tightened as he stormed out of the bathroom and roughly threw the article of clothing down on his roommate’s bed. His attention then shifted to all of the damned lights that had been turned on and he quickly began shutting all of them off. He wanted no reminders of that boy whatsoever.
Joshua’s attention jerked towards the window when the sudden sound of heavy rain and thunder began taking place outside. His gaze hardened as he stepped forward and pulled back the curtain. Despite his best efforts of blocking his roommate from his mind…that boy was the first person he thought of. His fingers gripped the screen door handle and drew it open as he stepped outside and looked towards the ground…as if he expected to see…
Just as quickly…Joshua re-entered his room and shut the screen door. He would think no more on his roommate! Joshua didn’t care where he was or what he was doing.

INTO THE NOTHING LEAVE ME AT THE BOTTOM WHERE THERE'S NOTHING LEFT His situation with his roommate was certainly out of the ordinary. Under normal circumstances, Brendon never would have wanted something like this. In fact, a situation like this should have been his worst nightmare. It was total and complete confrontation, control, and violence. He should have been enraged. He should have felt feelings of contempt and hatred toward that man. He should have wanted another roommate.
But, he didn’t. He didn’t feel any of those things. And, worst of all, he wanted Joshua as his roommate. He wanted to return to his room and see him there. It was a sick and twisted thought—and one connected to the want to be cruel and taunting. He wanted to fight with him. He wanted them to both struggle over the power and leader position. He… felt… attachment.
Brendon’s stomach dropped and those last three words of thought caused him to feel sick. His stomach clenched and he wanted to reject the thought of that actually being a reality. But, it also made him emotional. Had he really fallen so low that he would do something like this to himself? Was he really yearning and fabricating an attachment to a random, messed up, person? All of this just to feel better, to cure the loneliness that tore him apart inside.
He didn’t need anyone…
Brendon laid his head against his knees and closed his eyes, allowing the sound of the pouring rain to mask out any other noise. He let the rain fill his mind because he didn’t want to think or feel anything else. Regency Academy wasn’t for him… High school wasn’t for him.
None of this…
He didn’t want… any of it.
