A melancholy town where we never smile. And all I wanna hear is the message beep. | The buzz of his phone used to be a constant nightmare. Socializing wasn’t his thing, per say. He could. It just took up unnecessary energy and no one wanted to hang out with the gloomy kid in the corner. Dominick was alright with that. It only changed a few years back when by chance a freshman glued himself to him, as if claiming that he was now his friend and Nick had no choice in the matter. Not that he truly minded, for else he wouldn’t be seated at one of the campus’ tables checking his phone every five seconds.
He puckered his lips—pouting—as there were no new text messages waiting for him in his inbox. He already knew there wasn’t. But he had checked, thinking that perhaps he had missed it. Placing the phone on the table, he picked at the book instead. Usually it was easy to be sucked into the fantasy world of whatever he was reading, but words didn’t seem to stick. He’d read the sentences over thrice before simply slumping down. The side of his head rested upon the open book whilst one arm curved over it. His other happened to be petting the chin of the stray campus cat whom found it’s way onto his lap.
Oliver and he had planned to meet up after they’d settled in their dorms. Dominick had been early; he was the type to wake up before the sun... a habit that hadn’t died from his sportsman years. Instead of going to the fields or a morning jog, however, he was left lingering and feeling off. There was a feeling in the pit of stomach that made him restless, as if he needed to get up a run a mile to unleash the energy within him. He denied it being excitement. Denied that it was because he hadn't seen him in a week or so.

Oliver was vibrating in excitement the entire way to school, and as he dumped all his things in his dorm. He barely even unpacked before he was rushing off to the place he and Dominick had promised to meet. He didn't even bother alerting Dominick that he was on his way - more of a surprise, and who didn't love surprises? Dominick was sitting around, reading and checking his phone. Oliver felt a warmth in his chest, knowing Dominick was probably waiting for a message from him. He cares after all. Oliver thought, cheekily. Of course the dark haired boy was early, too. In the two years that Oliver had known him, he could hardly recall a single time when the other boy had been late. Oliver, on the other hand, was always late. He constantly forgot deadlines and meeting times and anything that required punctuality. But, of course, that was part of his charm. Oliver took a step back to get a running start before he ran towards his best friend. "Incoming!" he shouted at the top of his lungs before he barreled into the other boy from behind and grabbing him in a bear hug, "Didja miss me, Mikey?" he asked, leaning over Dominick's shoulder and sticking his tongue out like an idiot.

A melancholy town where we never smile. And all I wanna hear is the message beep. | Dominick didn’t like surprises.
Surprises were not fun, even if it was from your precious manchild of a best friend. He had five seconds to straighten up before he was squished between a person and the table. His feline friend showing their distaste for the whole situation via sinking their claws with a sharp, low grumble and darting off Dominick’s lap for the closest sign of safety. ‘Take me with you.’
Dominick, instead, was forced to act akin to a captured kitten accepting his defeat. His hands that had automatically gripped the table for dear life soon relaxed and all Oliver got in response to his query was an annoyed grunt. Like he was going to admit that he had missed him (Oliver must know deep down he did). The tips of his ears darkening a shade of red did not help Mikey’s cause in the least.
To hide that, he moved a hand in attempt to press into the upper portion of Oliver’s face—lets not accidentally get licked—in hopes of peeling him off… pulling his best “was that rly necessary” face.

Oliver watched the cat run away in interest. "Was that Cocoa?" he mumbled curiously into Dominick's ear. He remembered that cat from past years at Regency, it was one of the sweeter cats. Secretly, Oliver had given nicknames to all the local strays. He was sure almost everyone did at some point, but he couldn't help it. They were just so cute. Speaking of cute... "I didn't think animals liked you, Mikey," Oliver poked his friend in the side, clambering off of him in favor of sitting next to him at the table. "I always imagined they'd be scared of your ugly face," he laughed as if what he said was the funniest thing he'd heard all day (honestly, up until now, it probably was). Oliver stared at Dominick, giving him a once over after not seeing him for so long (yes, a week was a long time in Oliver-world, especially when it came to Mikey). "You look pale" he noted, comparing his now very tanned arm (thanks to his week long vacation in the sun), "You really need to spend more time outside, Mikey, you don't want to turn into a vampire or something." Oliver wrinkled his nose in obvious distaste at the idea. Vampires, after all, were icky creatures. Aliens, though... They would be way cool to have as friends

[attr=class,milyrics2]But if I were king of the world [attr=class, milyrics]I'd be the crazy fool to go and give it all away just to be next to you. But like the dreams I have, the notes are lost along the way. [attr=class, micrown]♚ KODIAK | He tried to focus on his words… what he was saying and not the sound of his voice. Dominick failed to do this, however, as his question goes in one ear and out the other. It wasn’t fair that Oliver had this effect that caused the black haired teen to freeze up whenever he so much as invaded his personal bubble let alone touched him. He knew that it wasn’t his overly clingy friend’s fault. It was Dominick’s.
Their time spent away from each other had made it clear to him, too. Whenever someone else touched him it was so easy to brush them away without so much a thought. He didn’t want them touching him. They weren’t allowed to touch him. They would try; he’d casually dodge it. That was how it always worked. But what he disliked about their situation right now was that he didn’t hate the fact that Oliver touched him.
No, he actually quite liked it when he did.
That was probably why he hated it. No, he knew it was. He just didn’t want to confess it to himself. It was easier to hide away and deny such things. But he couldn’t deny it right when he was doing this and they hadn’t been around each other for so long. His guard had been down. In the end, Dominick may have panicked a bit… forgetting about his wishes of escaping off with the kitten that Oliver called—named?—Cocoa.
“I didn’t think animals liked you, Mikey,” Finally he seemed satisfied enough and climbed off him, taking a seat to his right. It didn’t keep Oliver from poking him in the side, however, and the teen squirmed away from the touch. “I always imagined they’d be scared of your ugly face.” Oh. Well. That ruined that. His composure seemed to return to him. Shoulders slouched for a moment before he squared them again, scowling out of habit at Oliver with his eyebrows permanently lowered.
‘Animals don’t just like me, they adore me.’ would have been a good response there, Dominick, along with maybe a; ‘Not everyone’s born with a face like yours.’ But instead, he just grumbled. He swore it was an attempt to tell him how rude he was being, yet the words didn’t really seem to form for him right now. Oliver didn’t seem to have a problem with that, though, as he continued on talking. Sometimes Dominick thanked the Gods that Oliver could hold a conversation with a statue and only needed a vague nod or response every now and then.
“S’fine, you’re just tan.” He wouldn’t comment about how it wasn’t the first time he’d been called a vampire. His mum has been reading too many books in that genre. She’d decided that Mikey here fit the bill with his paleness and tendency to stay up all night… along with his “case of the grumps”. No, mum, he’s just a senior in high school. Can’t wait for college. That’s when the real “fun” began.
“How was your trip?” Dominick already knew most of what had happened during it, but he had been avoiding asking that question during their many conversations during the week they’d be separated. It felt like he had to get used to this all over again.
